My first year with my candle business
I thought it appropriate to begin with a little blurb about who I am and my journey over the past year.
My name is Lori Clark and I live in Colorado with my husband, two dogs and three cats. We moved her at the end of March 2006 from Phoenix, Arizona. I must say it has been a real adventure, just from the weather standpoint! My husband and I are both in the aviation industry, with my husband a pilot for a major airline and me a consultant to commercial pilots. In my “former life”, I did the interviewing and hiring of pilots for an airline and although I loved my job the stress and stability was getting the best of me. Therefore, I took a leap of faith and quit. Began my consulting firm and never looked back. That was three years ago. Although my consulting business has been growing and doing very well, it was not enough - I needed to be busy.
Sitting here writing this I am still in a fog of disbelief that my name was included in the top 10 sponsor list for 2006. I must admit; I did not even know that such a list existed. Sure, I knew about the top 10 Sponsor Monster list every month; but it did not even dawn on me that there would be a top 10 for the year. So, when the first congratulations came in I was completely floored and very honored to be among those in this business that I’ve admired since my joining in May 2006.
Many have asked, “How did you do it?” especially in light of my joining in May and not doing anything with my business until the end of June…really. I have to answer honestly: I am not sure if it is due to sheer determination, not knowing what failure or success meant in this business, or a blend of the two. I began my journey with no prior Multi Level Marketing experience except many, many moons ago (when I was a kid) watching my folks struggle with their home business in “old school” MLM. Because of this history, I was skeptical of the new home business I had chosen - simply because of lack of knowledge and understanding.
Early on in my adventure with my new business, I vowed that failure or giving up would not be an option and that is exactly where my drive comes from. Looking back over the year, I can happily say that I have learned a lot; a lot about Network Marketing and, probably even more importantly, a lot about myself. I truly think the secret to anyone’s success is constantly being a student of yourself and the world that surrounds you. We live in an ever-changing world and I feel that it is up to us to adapt to the shifts and changes. My view is that in order for us to adapt to the changes around us we must first look inward for understanding of ourselves and why we act or react to situations, challenges and celebrations. Each of which is equally important in personal growth and knowledge. In my humble opinion, it is only after we are able to look at ourselves with understanding that we can then attempt to gain any understanding of others. When this occurs, we naturally become leaders. Ok… enough of the world according to Lori… <cheesy grin>.
With regard to “How I did it”: I think the most valuable piece to the puzzle is that I treat this as a business…my business. I make a conscious effort to work my business every single day, Ok, with the exception of Sundays. I look at it like this; if I were to hold a traditional 9-5 “J-O-B “I wouldn’t get paid if I didn’t go to work. So how is this any different? Well there really is one big difference. In the traditional workplace, you have others who are physically present and simply by their presence we are motivated to work. Self-motivation can be very difficult to muster in this business. One of the reasons I love this company – we have a ton of support networks with other distributors who are always willing to lend an ear, hand or shoulder. It is just up to us to reach out when we need it. The telephone training calls and the in-person conferences are an incredible boost for not only motivation but they also cement that we are not alone in this business. The conferences I have attended immensely boosted my motivation right along with my endurance.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Oliver Wendell Holmes which I find very profound and what I remind myself of every day: “Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it — but sail we must and not drift, nor lie at anchor.”
I will definitely meet you at the top!
